While moonstones are found in a few countries, the most beautiful and rare "Royal Blue Moonstones" come from a small village in Southern Sri Lanka called Meetiyagoda.

Located very close to the famous beaches of Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda, this quiet village surrounded by coconut trees is a top attraction for travelers worldwide.

Most moonstones found around the world are white or grey. However, the stones from Meetiyagoda are special. When light hits these polished gems, they glow with a mysterious blue mist (known as adularescence). The deeper the blue color, the higher the value. 🪵 Traditional Mines Without Heavy Machinery

The most amazing part about Meetiyagoda is that miners still use eco-friendly, traditional methods from hundreds of years ago.

* Hand-dug pits: Miners dig square pits 10 to 40 meters deep entirely by hand.

* Natural wooden support: They use strong coconut and Kithul wood beams to stop the walls from collapsing.

* Pure human effort: Workers use traditional wooden wheels to pull up buckets of soil. They only use a small electric motor to pump out rainwater.

When you turn off the main Galle-Colombo road into Meetiyagoda, you enter a peaceful village. With its red dirt roads, cinnamon gardens, and coconut trees, the vibe is purely authentic.    2. Gem washing: See how they wash the soil in water baskets to find rough moonstones.

   3. Cutting and polishing: Watch skilled local artists use traditional machines to turn rough rocks into shining gems.

Many mining spots also show you how local Ceylon cinnamon is made.

🚗 How to Get to Meetiyagoda from Katunayake Airport (BIA)

For international travelers landing at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), there are two main ways to reach the Meetiyagoda moonstone mines comfortably:

1. By Private Taxi / Rideshare (Fastest & Most Comfortable)

 The Route: The taxi will take the E03 Expressway to Colombo and then connect directly to the Southern Expressway (E01). You need to exit from the Kurundugahahetekma Interchange.

* Travel Time: Around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.

2. By Highway Luxury Bus (Budget-Friendly Option)


 Step 1: From the airport, take the Express Bus (Route 187-E) directly to the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal.

* Step 2: From Colombo, board a Luxury Highway Bus heading to Galle or Matara via the Southern Expressway.

* Step 3: Get down at the Ambalangoda Bus Stand. From Ambalangoda, it is just a short Tuk-Tuk ride to reach the Meetiyagoda moonstone mines.

There are several government-registered, family-owned showrooms along Batapola Road in Meetiyagoda. Here are the most popular spots:

 Meetiyagoda Moonstone Mine 2place: A trusted spot run by three generations of miners with very friendly staff.

* Moonstone No:07 (AC Malliyawadu): One of the very first mines in the area, offering silver and gold jewelry certified by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.

* Beruwalage Moonstone Mine: Another highly recommended workshop popular among international tourists.
