The Forgotten History of Our Solar System: The Rhythm of Life on Three Planets

Billions of years ago, our solar system looked completely different from what we see today. Right now, we think of Earth as the only home for life. However, in the distant past, Venus and Mars had their own unique rhythm of life. Let's explore how the changing heat of the Sun decided the fate of these three worlds.

The Beginning: 4 Billion Years Ago (The Golden Age of Mars)

About half a billion years after the Sun was born, Mars was actually the very first planet to create a comfortable environment for life. Scientists call this the Noachian Period.

• Mars' Golden Age: Mars was small, so it cooled down quickly. It built a thick atmosphere full of carbon dioxide and a strong magnetic field. NASA rovers have proved that Mars had massive rivers and a giant ocean back then. It was the perfect home for tiny microbes.

• Earth’s Baby Steps: While Mars was thriving with water, Earth was still a baby (Early Archean Era). Our planet had no oxygen, and the oceans were hot and acidic. But deep down in the ocean floors, the very first single-celled life forms were just starting to form.

• Venus' Harsh Start: At this time, Venus was a wild, extreme world filled with erupting volcanoes and rivers of hot lava.

3.5 Billion Years Ago (The Great Shift)

As time passed, the Sun was a cooler star, shining with 25% to 30% less brightness than it does today. Scientists call this the Faint Young Sun Paradox. Because the Sun was cooler, the roles of the three planets shifted in a surprising way:

• Venus – The "Youthful" Stage (20°C - 50°C): Since the Sun was cooler, Venus was not the hellhole it is today. Instead, it had the best climate for life in the solar system. NASA's 3D climate models show that Venus had shallow liquid water oceans and a warm climate similar to Earth's tropics. It was the perfect time for living cells to grow fast.

• Earth – Still in "Infancy" (26°C - 85°C): Earth stayed warm because of its thick atmosphere. Rocks found in Western Australia (like the Apex Chert) show that the first bacteria were growing slowly in an oxygen-free world.

• Mars – The "Old Age" Stage (-40°C to -60°C): The best days for Mars were already over. Because it was small, its inner core cooled down, and it lost its protective magnetic field. NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft data shows that powerful solar winds stripped away the Martian atmosphere, drying up its oceans. Mars was rapidly aging.

2.5 Billion Years Ago (Earth’s Ultimate Victory)

As the Sun grew older, it became hotter. The "habitable zone" (the safe distance for life) shifted outward, flipping the fate of the planets upside down:

• Earth: Earth entered its prime youth. The Great Oxidation Event filled the atmosphere with oxygen, starting the true golden age of complex life.

• Venus: Venus could not handle the rising heat. It suffered a deadly runaway greenhouse effect. Its oceans evaporated, temperatures soared to 200°C–300°C, and it entered its harsh old age.

• Mars: Mars lost all its heat and atmosphere. It became a frozen desert around -60°C, turning into a completely "dead" world.

Conclusion: The Unsolved Red Mystery

Today, Mars looks like a dead planet covered in red iron oxide and carbon dioxide. But its deepest secrets remain hidden. NASA and scientists around the world are still exploring it, and the search is far from over.

Could Mars be a world that was ruined by an ancient, advanced civilization? Even though there is no water on the surface, could there be other liquid oceans hidden deep underground? Some alternative theories even suggest that to survive the deadly surface, small intelligent beings—about two feet tall—evolved and now live secretly inside modern, high-tech underground cities.

NASA has not officially disproven these alternative theories yet. Until the absolute truth about our solar system's past is revealed, Mars will remain a beautiful, eternal mystery.
